The teenager killed when the car he was driving crashed into a house in south Auckland, died just metres from his home.

Police say the stolen Subaru smashed into the side of the house, on Alexander Crescent in Otara, at about 4am Thursday morning.

They say the car came into the corner at speed when it crashed, and they'll investigate whether alcohol was a factor.

Two other teenagers who were in the car are in Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries.

Eighteen year old Katai Liu, who lives across the road from the house, likened the noise from the crash to an airplane flying past.

Mr Liu says he rushed over to the property and helped a passenger in the car.

A couple and their baby, who lived in the Housing New Zealand property, were not at home at the time.

Housing New Zealand says the family and the tenant from an adjoining unit will be rehoused in other state houses.
