Govt consults Dunedin on offshore oil block

9:13 pm on 12 October 2013

People in Dunedin are being asked for their views on the Government's 2014 Petroleum Block Offer off the Otago coast.

The Government is consulting local iwi and Dunedin City Council about an offshore-block offer in the South Canterbury Basin.

The council's sustainability adviser says the council is asking for community feedback, which will be included in the council's official submission to the Government.

Maria Ioannou says it was decided to canvass the community's opinions before the new council is sworn in on 29 October to give people time to have a say.

The Government's consultation period for the block offer finishes on 14 November.

Ms Ioannou says some groups have very strong views on the offshore oil-and-gas issues, and she expects a relatively strong response to the council's call for feedback.
