Pora disappointed at wait for parole decision

The convicted murderer and rapist Teina Pora must wait a few more days to find out whether he'll be freed on parole.

Pora, who has twice been convicted of the attack on Susan Burdett in her South Auckland home in 1992, has spent 20 years in jail for crimes he says he didn't commit.

After he and his lawyer, Jonathan Krebs, appeared before the Parole Board at Auckland Prison in Paremoremo on Monday, the board reserved its decision, which is expected to be released within days.

Mr Krebs told waiting media outside the prison that Pora was disappointed there had not been a decision straight away.

But he said the board has a lot of information to consider and it is right that they take some time over it.

Mr Krebs says they are hoping to be able to appeal to the Privy Council to have the convictions quashed.

He says Pora has been out of prison on home release of up to 72 hours and was shocked at the price of things when he first left prison.
