Police say an experienced officer attacked on the job in Auckland overnight is recovering at home, but keen to get back to work.
The sergeant had gone on his own to a boarding house in the Auckland suburb of Glen Eden, after a domestic dispute.
Inspector Claire Humble says the sergeant was attacked by people who were not even involved in the incident - a man who walked up to him and started punching and biting him, and a woman who joined in.
She says the officer is very experienced and well respected within the community, and the incident underlines the unpredictable nature of what front line staff experience everyday.
A 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman are due to appear in court charged with assaulting a police officer.
