Dentist to face restrictions if he returns

A convicted dentist will be entitled to reapply for a practising licence in a year but with financial management restrictions, the Health Disciplinary Tribunal says.

Sanjay Govind Sathe was found guilty in the Manakau District Court in September last year of 18 charges relating to the dishonest use of documentation and false accounting.

Earlier this year, the tribunal suspended his practising licence for 12 months and fined him $9000.

Dental Council registrar Mark Rogers said the decision to suspend him was not based on Mr Sathe's clinical capability.

"This is not about his clinical competence, this is about his conduct, and it's probably an appropriate outcome given the facts."

The Health Disciplinary Tribunal had determined Dr Sathe should be suspended for a year and, if he came back on to the register after that, he was to practice under certain conditions to restrict his practice, he said.

Mr Sathe was entitled to be a dentist in the future but would face financial management restrictions.
