The police are seeking the public's help after an attempted abduction of a young boy in Christchurch.

Five children were playing in a tree in the Botanic Gardens near Peacock Fountain at about 2pm on Saturday when they were approached by a man.

Police say he grabbed the arm of a four-year-old in the group and tried to pull him away, but it appears he was scared off by the other children.

The man is described as short in height, clean shaven, with short black hair, aged about 40, possibly Asian and speaking with a New Zealand accent.

He was wearing what appeared to be a mid thigh length red and black top, what looked to be brown trousers and brown leather shoes, and dark glasses.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw a man fitting that description acting suspiciously in the area.
