9:58 pm on 20 October 2013

Police say they have arrested a woman in connection with an attack on two French tourists in Napier.

She will be charged with assault with intent to rob and police say more charges are likely.

The tourists, both 22, were approached late on Saturday night while they were in their van at Westshore Beach.

A man and a woman initially asked the couple for a cigarette lighter.

Police say the assailants pulled out a hand gun and a baseball bat and the male tourist was hit with the pistol in the scuffle.

He managed to lean on the van's horn, scaring the attackers off.

Police say the male offender is still at large and police are appealing for information about him.

The male tourist received injuries to his eye and cheek, but the woman was unharmed.

The French couple are being helped by Victim Support.
