State-owned weather forecaster MetService has more than doubled its annual profit by cutting expenses and signing up new customers.

MetService's net profit for the 12 months to June was $2.7 million, up from $1.1 million the previous year.

Its revenue increased to $42.3 million; a slight increase on the previous year, while operating expenses fell by 5% to $37.7 million.

MetService became a state-owned enterprise in 1992 and was the first national weather service in the world to operate as a successful business.

The company has paid out more than $47 million to the Crown in the past 20 years.
