Former mayor of Christchurch Vicki Buck has been named the new deputy mayor.
New mayor Lianne Dalziel announced on Tuesday that Ms Buck, who made a return to local government this month as a councillor, would take the position.
Ms Buck was the mayor of Christchurch for three terms from 1989 and, before that, a councillor from 1974.
Ms Buck says her new job is not a ceremonial role and she will use the position to ensure that when residents come to the council with suggestions and ideas, they will happen - where possible.
Councillors are working to establish the new standing committees and will make announcements on chairs and deputy chairs, along with portfolio responsibilities as soon as that work is complete.
