Tenants group want housing plan actioned soon

The Tenants Protection Association says it is disappointed the Government has taken so long to start developing a housing recovery plan for Christchurch and it needs to be actioned as soon as possible.

Government officials told a gathering of about 100 people at the Christchurch Housing Forum on Wednesday that they are nearly ready to start working on a plan, but admitted more resources would be helpful.

The manager of Tenants Protection, Helen Gatonyi, says Christchurch has a major housing problem - especially given the large number of earthquake-damaged properties that cannot be lived in.

Ms Gatonyi says she understands there needs to be lots of consultation before a plan is formed, but she would have liked something in place sooner.

She says the topic of affordable housing is often talked about in relation to home ownership and hopes the plan will make way for affordable rentals also.
