Rapper helping people to understand science

A visiting rap artist says the public is keen to know more about science.

Hundreds of people have converged on Dunedin for the second Science Teller festival, which began on Friday afternoon and runs for three days.

Baba Brinkman has brought his show, the Rap Guide to Evolution, which ran in a New York theatre off Broadway for five months.

Mr Brinkman says science is full of stories - albeit very fact-based stories - crying out to be told.

He says there is an emerging zeitgeist or public demand for science and the story it is telling, but it is not always accessible through peer-reviewed journals or specialist science reporting.

Mr Brinkman says rapping helps people turn on to science but, just as importantly, turns others on to rap who are sceptical of it as an art form.
