Antarctic programme gets new leader

9:51 pm on 26 October 2013

The new chief executive of Antarctica New Zealand says he plans to improve support to the teams of scientists carrying out research on the ice.

Peter Beggs has been appointed head of the organisation following the departure of Lou Sanson to take up the role of director-general of the Department of Conservation.

Mr Beggs, who was born and bred in Christchurch, has held senior executive roles worldwide, most recently as country director for Thales New Zealand.

He says he wants to improve the standard of logistical support to the scientists living in Antarctica over the coming summer.

Mr Beggs will take up the role of Antarctica New Zealand's chief executive early in the New Year.
