Jetties engulfed as lake level rises

The Queenstown Lakes District Council says it is monitoring the region's high lake waters but is not concerned about flooding.

Council spokesperson Meaghan Miller says heavy rain has caused lake levels to rise, engulfing some jetties underwater and providing a novelty for visitors to the resort town.

However, Ms Miller says the council is not worried, as high lake levels are not unusual for this time of year.

She says the lakes can sit at this level for weeks and if flooding were to occur it would be a very gradual process.

She says the temperature is expected to drop, causing snow, which is better than more rain.
