Helicopter crashes near Queenstown

8:26 pm on 28 October 2013

Four rescue helicopters have ferried a dozen people from the scene of a helicopter crash near Queenstown.

The Rescue Coordination Centre says it appears a helicopter landing near the Tyndall Glacier clipped another on the ground at the head of the Shotover River about 3.15pm on Monday.

Search mission coordinator Kevin Banaghan says the crashed helicopter's injured pilot and 11 passengers with various minor injuries from both helicopters were taken back to Queenstown shortly after 5pm.

The pilot was then flown to Dunedin Hospital.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission is sending two investigators to Queenstown on Tuesday morning.

The investigators will interview witnesses before flying in to inspect the accident site and wreckage before any recovery work begins.
