Man acquitted after wife loses baby in collision

A Wellington District Court judge has dismissed a case against a taxi driver involved in a collision which injured his pregnant wife, who lost their unborn child after an emergency caesarean later that night.

Bililigne Gebretsadik, 41, had pleaded not guilty to two charges of careless driving causing injury, and one of careless driving causing death.

Conflicting evidence was given about traffic light phases after the collision in June 2012 when Mr Gebretsadik allegedly drove through a red light at an intersection in the Wellington suburb of Newtown. He said he had a green light.

Judge Tom Broadmoor said it was up to police to establish beyond reasonable doubt whether Mr Gebretsadik had gone through a red light, and this had not been proven conclusively.

The judge said he did not criticise police for bringing the case, saying it was proper to examine the facts in the public interest.
