Video games which have typically been considered the pastime of children and teenagers are now being played by three generations of New Zealanders.

A report by Queensland's Bond University shows a big shift in who is playing video games and on what device.

People in their 40s and 50s now make up the largest group of new gamers in this country, using smartphones and laptops rather than a traditional console or home computer.

The average gamer is now 33, not far behind the overall average age of 37.

The chief executive officer of Australia's Interactive Games and Entertainment Association, Ron Curry, says video gaming is connecting the young and the old, with the first generation of gamers now playing with their children and their parents.

Ron Curry says with 90% families own at least one gaming device.
