A Korean tourist has died after being hit by a car, after he went out for a walk to gaze at the stars, near Queenstown.

A Queenstown police spokesperson says Daegun Yun was hit by a car shortly about 10.15pm on Tuesday near Arthurs Point, on the outskirts of Queenstown. The 50-year-old was visiting New Zealand with his wife and children.

Police say he was wearing dark clothing and walking along the unlit road when he was hit. A woman travelling in a car behind the vehicle that hit Mr Yun attempted to treat him but he died at the scene.

The driver of the car, a Queenstown man, was too distressed to speak to police at the time but is expected to be interviewed on Wednesday.

The man's body will be taken to Christchurch for a post mortem.
