The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust has been announced as a major backer behind the organisation bringing the Cricket World Cup to the city.

The South Island city has hosting rights for the tournament's opening match on 14 February 2015.

The trust will loan the Canterbury Cricket Trust $3 million towards a new pavilion at Hagley Park, to be written off over five years.

The cricket trust is responsible for financing and delivering a new oval, including the $9 million pavilion.

The Christchurch City Council will develop the oval and the embankment and has also committed $1 million in funding.

The trust earlier gained Environment Court approval to do the work, subject to having a sound financial plan.
