McCormacks Bay Causeway reopens

4:12 pm on 1 November 2013

After six months of earthquake repairs, residents in the Christchurch seaside suburbs of Redcliffs and Sumner will now have a shorter commute to the city, with the reopening of a major causeway in the area.

The McCormacks Bay Causeway in Mount Pleasant was officially opened on Friday morning to all traffic, allowing Redcliffs and Sumner residents to again take the shorter and straight route home.

Residents have had to endure daily detours on this route since April.

Contractors had to demolish the original earthquake damaged culverts and replace them, while also building a new bridge over the existing main culvert.

Then the seawall was repaired and rebuilt and the causeway road reconstructed and resurfaced.
