USB stick with customer details missing

A memory card with personal information about 1200 Fidelity Life Insurance customers has gone missing.

The USB stick was taken from an employee's bag, which was left in his car while he attended a company meeting.

Fidelity Life chief executive Milton Jennings confirmed on Friday that the stick was taken two months ago and contains sensitive customer information.

"It varied per client. So for some it was just name and address, but for others it had details of their investments and possibly bank account numbers."

Mr Jennings says a letter has been sent out notifying affected customers. Fidelity Life is working with police and the Privacy Commissioner while an internal investigation is carried out.

The company says it is not aware of accounts being accessed illegally since the memory stick went missing and has apologised to customers.

Mr Jennings says the employee involved has been moved into a different role.
