A man is on life support after a random attack in Auckland's city centre early on Saturday morning.

Police say the 25-year-old victim came out of McDonalds near Britomart at about 5.10am and stood on the footpath near the road.

He was approached by a man who threw a single punch, striking him in the head.

Police say the victim fell to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement.

He remains in a serious condition in Auckland Hospital.

The attacker is described as a Maori or Polynesian of solid build. He was wearing a long sleeved blue shirt and had a tattoo on his right forearm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Florence says police want to hear from anyone who saw the incident or can identify the man involved.

Mr Florence says the man had been in McDonalds with several other men and women and the group left straight after the attack.
