Plane aborts takeoff, comes off runway

A plane with 16 people on board came off the runway at Auckland Airport on Saturday afternoon.

The Fire Service says the Air New Zealand aircraft aborted takeoff and stopped on the grass at 3.08pm.

An airport spokesperson says no-one was injured and the 14 passengers and two crew were taken back to the terminal by bus.

It is not yet known what caused the incident which disrupted some flights, including a Qantas plane from Sydney that was diverted to Hamilton.

Air New Zealand says the Taupo-bound service was operated by Vincent Aviation on behalf of Eagle Air. Passengers were put on another flight.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission will investigate.
