Swedish man who died on Aoraki Mt Cook named

A Swedish man who died after falling on Aoraki Mt Cook was an extreme-altitude skier and experienced climber, who police say had uccessfully climbed the East Face of the mountain last week.

Magnus Kastengren, 32, was on a climbing and extreme skiing tour of the country with another Swedish man.

The pair were climbing and skiing near the Summit Ridge Porter Col route when Mr Kastengren fell.

Authorities were alerted by Mr Kastengren's climbing partner Andreas Fransson about 8.30am on Sunday and a rescue party was sent by helicopter

Mr Fransson was picked up by the rescue team just before before midday, who then retrieved Mr Kastengren's body. Police say Mr Fransson has returned to Sweden.
