Climber rescued from South Island glacier

9:54 am on 4 November 2013

A climber who fell and broke both legs has been rescued from a South Island glacier.

The Rescue Coordination Centre says the woman climber fell as she and two men were climbing the Arrowsmith Range.

The group set off an emergency locator beacon at 8.45pm on Sunday. They were found on the Cameron Glacier at about 10.30pm but their position, near the upper reaches of the Rakaia River, was too tight to allow winching so the helicopter had to land instead.

The climber was carried for about 45 minutes through snow and ice to the helicopter flown to Christchurch Hospital for treatment.

Her climbing companions decided to stay on the glacier overnight and organise private helicopter transport out of the area on Monday.
