Doctor admits misconduct charge

A former Blenheim doctor has pleaded guilty to charges of professional misconduct over an intimate examination of a female patient.

Ravi Tamma, who has returned to India, has been suspended from practice and fined.

The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal said Dr Tamma admitted to inappropriate and unnecessary touching of a South Korean patient without gloves during a consultation in August 2011.

He failed to offer her a chaperone or to gain the informed consent of the patient, who was naked and not covered.

Dr Tamma also admitted deliberately falsifying notes later in an attempt to justify actions he knew were wrong.

The tribunal suspended him for 18 months and imposed conditions should he return to work in New Zealand.
