Spate of burglaries in Whangarei

Police in Whangarei are investigating a spate of night-time burglaries, many targeting elderly people.

Police say houses in the Kensington and Otangarei area were broken into while the occupants are asleep. The burglars brazenly rummaging through cupboards and taking alcohol, televisions, and often stealing car keys and cars.

Early on Saturday, three teenagers were arrested for a burglary in Otangarei. Police say they are believed to be responsible for other similar burglaries over the past week.

The suspects, who are aged 14 to 16 years, were disturbed in an elderly couple's house and were apprehended after a search involving police dogs.

They were due to appear in court laster in the day and police said they will oppose bail.

All three cases were referred to Youth Aid.
