A search and rescue operation is underway for a 35-year-old tramper who became separated from her group in Kahurangi National Park on the north-west of the South Island.
Siobhan Flynn was with an extended family group of five and was last seen about 10 am on Sunday.
The group had entered the park from Mt Arthur and stayed at Salisbury Hut on Saturday night before departing for Karamea Bend on Sunday.
Along the way, the group became separated with four members making it to Karamea Bend, but not Ms Flynn.
The group stayed there on Sunday night before one walked out and raised the alarm.
Police search and rescue coordinator Sergeant Steve Savage says an entry in a hut logbook suggests Ms Flynn had an accident and met up with an American woman.
Mr Savage says she could now be heading back to Nelson.
