A memorial service for Auckland rugby great Papali'itele Peter Fatialofa has been held.

The former Manu Samoa captain, better known as 'Fats', died suddenly in Apia on 6 November. He was 54.

Hundreds of Mr Fatialofa's friends and fans answered his family's invitation to farewell him at the service at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau, South Auckland, on Tuesday night.

His casket was carried in to the sound of conch shells and is covered in ceremonial fine mats.

Speakers at the service included former All Blacks Bryan Williams and Joe Stanley, as well as members of Mr Fatialofa's family.

His funeral service will be held at the events centre at 10am on Wednesday, before his burial at the Manukau Memorial Gardens.
