Trams returning to Christchurch

Christchurch's historic trams are to resume operating in the central city for the first time since the devastating February 2011 earthquake.

The trams have been stored temporarily at the Ferrymead Heritage Park but the first of them returned to service on Monday.

Michael Esposito, the managing director of the tour company Welcome Aboard, says major repairs to the 2.6km tram tracks that loop through the city were completed earlier in November as were overhead tram wiring and cables.

Mr Esposito says the trams will return in three stages, with the first being a new but shortened linear city route.
