Auckland city eyes private sponsorships

Auckland Council is exploring private sector interest in sponsoring everything from community programmes to major facilities in the region.

The council's economic development agency says it's the country's biggest quest for sponsors by a local body.

One council agency, Waterfront Auckland, says it has already had discussions with possible sponsors for the historic Shed 10 building, which doubles as a cruise ship terminal.

ATEED economic development agency chief executive Brett O'Reilly says there's been strong interest in backing community programmes and events.

Political agreement on a policy stating what types of sponsorship will be acceptable will be sought next year.
