The Government on Thursday unveiled its schedule for rebuilding and repairing 115 schools throughout Canterbury over the next decade.

It is investing $1.137 billion to modernise more than 80% of classrooms following devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.

Five new schools are to be built in the region and 18 existing schools will be completely rebuilt - eight on new sites and 10 on existing sites.

The Ministry of Education will also provide major upgrades for 34 schools and will moderately develop another 58 over the next decade.

It says schools which have already been announced as merging or relocating will be given priority, followed by schools in communities projected to significantly grow.

The Government's proposals attracted 554 submissions - many from schools that will close or merge such as Manning and Branston intermediates.

Education Minister Hekia Parata told those two schools on Thursday that Spreydon and South Hornby schools will move on to the land they vacate when they merge on to other sites.
