McKinnon was fighting Robert Berridge for the World Boxing Organisation oriental light heavyweight title in Hamilton on Saturday night, and lost by a technical knockout when the referee ended the bout.

Shortly afterwards he collapsed with a brain bleed and was rushed to hospital.

Manager Ken Reinsfield told Morning Report he had brain surgery on Sunday and is in a stable condition and is talking.

He said McKinnon is at the end of his career and needs to question whether he should keep boxing once he's recovered.

Reinsfield said he is likely to move to a ward on Monday.
