Firefighters have managed to contain a bush fire on the Coromandel Peninsula on Monday night.

Two helicopters are being kept on standby overnight and will dampen down hot spots on Tuesday morning.

The fire began about 2pm in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames and at one stage threatened the home of the former Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons.

Her husband, Harry Parke, said the fire looked to be moving out of control for a while. He removed items of sentimental value from the wooden house and almost made the decision to take out furniture.

However, Mr Parke said the danger has passed, but a lot of native bush on the property has been destroyed.
