A strong, shallow earthquake occurred in Canterbury on Monday night.
Geonet said the quake was magnitude 4.6 and 8km deep. It was centred 10km south-west of Christchurch at 11.40pm.
GNS duty seismologist Bill Fry said the quake was stronger than residents would have felt in some time.
Aftershocks were likely, but he said they will not be as strong.
