Firefighters and two helicopters will remain at the scene of a fire that destroyed native bush and scrub in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames.

The blaze was brought under control on Monday night.

Thames Valley Fire District Principal Rural Fire Officer Del Read said about 1.5 hectares were destroyed after embers carried on the wind from a fire on a nearby lifestyle block sparked the fire.

Mr Read said helicopters will be used to dampen down any hot spots on Tuesday and rain is forecast for the area which will be of some help.
