Mayor to investigate new concerns over review

3:03 pm on 20 November 2013

Whangarei mayor Sheryl Mai says she is making inquiries related to the council's recent review of chief executive Mark Simpson n the lead-up to council elections.

The review investigated Mr Simpspon's sacking of his personal assistant, Jan Walters, for nominating a mayoral candidate, and concluded that his conduct could not be criticised.

Council critics complained the review was not truly independent and called the outcome a whitewash.

Ms Mai says an affidavit written by Mr Simpson's other assistant, Ford Watson, has raised further concerns about the review and she hopes to launch a thorough investigation.

Mr Watson says he has also told the Office of the Auditor-General of his concerns.

However, a spokesperson says the Audit Office is not currently conducting any investigation into Whangarei District Council.

Mr Simpson says he has not seen Mr Watson's affidavit, but he understands the Audit Office has asked for further information from its informant and none has been provided.
