Council to announce major changes

Christchurch City Council is expected to announce major changes to staffing in a wide-ranging restructuring.

The embattled council has undergone major upheavals in the past year, with the chief executive stood down, and most of the old councillors not being voted back on to the council.

The announcement due on Thursday is understood to involve major restructuring and has been described as a transformation of the council, which has been under fire for its performance since the earthquakes.

It is not clear whether there will be job losses and there may be more of a focus on changing of roles.

Sources say the changes are aimed at making the council more able to meet the needs of the city as it rebuilds following the earthquakes and ensuring it is better placed to take over from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority in a few years.

It is understood the changes are aimed at moving away from the 'business as usual' approach, which the previous council was heavily criticised for.
