The police say a supermarket in the Wellington suburb of Newtown has been robbed by a man wielding a screwdriver.

Senior Sergeant Marc Clausen says officers were called to the Riddiford Street supermarket just before 10am on Saturday.

The man ran off with a cash drawer, but was caught in the carpark by supermarket staff and detained by them until police arrived.

Mr Clausen says some supermarket staff received very minor injuries while trying to restrain the man.

The accused will appear in court on Monday.
