A top-dressing plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the Manawatu town of Feilding on Sunday morning after it hit a cow on take-off.

Police say the pilot realised the plane's landing gear had been damaged after the impact at Taonui airfield in Pahiatua.

Officers instructed the pilot to fly to Feilding, 45 minutes away by road, where he landed the plane safely, despite missing a wheel.
