A livestock transport company south of Rotorua has been convicted and fined $26,000 for discharging effluent near water.
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council prosecuted Central Transport Ltd in Reporoa for breaching the Resource Management Act in March.
The company emptied stored effluent from stock on transport vehicles into a series of three ponds where solids are removed and the liquid irrigated into paddocks.
The regional council received a complaint effluent was flowing across State Highway 5 and after investigating found it had been draining off the same driveway and paddock where the company was irrigating.
The effluent had flowed into a drain and then into nearby streams, one of them a known bathing site for children and of significant cultural and ecological value.
