Police have released the names of two people killed in a car crash on State Highway 1 at Bankside in South Canterbury.
They are Gaurav Bhabhera, 28, an Indian national who was driving a south-bound vehicle, and Marae Judy Dean, 52, from Ashburton who was driving north on Tuesday.
Police believe Mr Bhabhera's car veered across the centre line.
Two female passengers, one from each vehicle, were flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.
Mr Bhabhera's wife is in a critical condition, while the other person is in a comfortable condition in a general ward.
Sergeant Chris Jones said the Indian couple were on holiday in New Zealand.
