Man in custody after AOS callout

A man is in custody after an Armed Offenders callout near Christchurch.

The man, aged in his 40s, has been referred to psychiatric services following an incident in Rangiora on Wednesday afternoon.

Up to 30 police including the AOS, the Police Negotiation Team and local officers were called in after reports the man had a firearm and was threatening to hurt himself.

Several locations were searched until he was contacted by police negotiators by phone and found in a vehicle.

St Joseph's Catholic School was temporarily locked down as a precaution.

The man was taken into custody without incident and has been referred to psychiatric services. He was not carrying a firearm.
