Auckland police are investigating a would-be scam in which a $50 note was apparently turned into three.
They say two African men performed a magic trick using chemicals in front of a Parnell business owner and then asked for a $50 note to repeat the illusion.
Police say had he agreed, the money would simply have been stolen.
The Auckland City Financial Crime Unit is investigating the incident.
