An Auckland teenager has been jailed for two years and seven months for killing his friend with a rife.

Zhivargo Williams was sentenced at the High Court in Auckland for manslaughter on Friday.

The 19 year-old accidentally shot Shaun Townsley, who was 18, at Williams' Manurewa home on 12 January this year.

Mr Townsley was urinating in the backyard when Williams fired the air rifle at a can on a tree stump.

The court heard he had been drinking and smoked marijuana earlier in the day.

Justice Lang told him it was a stupid and foolhardy use of a deadly firearm, saying he hoped the sentence would act as a deterrent for others.

The judge also imposed a three-month sentence on Williams to be served at the same time for unlawfully possessing the air rifle.
