The Interislander has re-opened the booking system for new passenger-vehicle bookings for the Kaitaki and the Aratere's replacement, the Stena Alegra.
Bookings will be taken for travel between 12 January and 31 March next year.
The Aratere is out of action after it lost a propeller in the Cook Strait earlier in November and bookings were stopped.
The Stena Alegra is coming from London and will provide two car passenger sailings a day from 12 January.
Two crossings will be freight only, while two will be a mix of freight and vehicle passengers.
Interislander general manager Thomas Davis said the Stena Alegra would not be able to take foot passengers initially, as it was not compatible with the passenger gangways at the terminals.
It can carry 350 passengers and 78 trucks, while the Aratere is capable of taking 600 passengers and 28 trucks.
