High winds that affected flights in and out of Wellington on Saturday morning have eased, and the backlog is expected to be cleared by the end of the day.

A spokesperson for Air New Zealand says it expects to be able to accommodate on Saturday flights all customers whose travel has been affected.

Five incoming flights were diverted to other airports and 13 other flights cancelled.

Wellington Airport spokesperson Briarley Kirk said flights to Gisborne, Palmerston North, Christchurch and Hamilton were cancelled, and a flight from Nelson had to turn back because it could not land safely.

The East by West ferry service, which operates between Wellington and Eastborne, cancelled a 10am crossing, as well as all sailings by one of its boats, the Harbour Explorer.

The weather also put a stop to the Christmas parade in the suburb of Johnsonville.
