New research shows parents are still struggling to understand the national standards in reading, writing and maths, and they do not yet have full confidence in the system.

However, the Council for Educational Research's survey of 684 parents also shows most are happy with the information they are getting on their children's performance.

Fifty-five percent said they think they understand the standards, which were introduced three years ago.

Forty-five percent supported the standards in principle, and 35% were unsure or neutral.

A key aim of the system is to improve reporting to parents, and 75% said school reports provided clear information about their child's performance.
