Shallow quake shakes West Coast

A strong, shallow earthquake shook residents awake on the north-west coast of the South Island early Sunday morning.

GeoNet said the 4.2-magnitude quake occurred at 4.08am and was centred 20 kilometres west of Reefton at a depth of 5 kilometres.

GNS duty seismologist John Ristau said about 30 residents reported feeling the quake in the early hours of Sunday. There have been no recorded aftershocks.
