A man found dead in Tauranga over the weekend was injured in a fight he had helped to break up hours before his death, police say.
Lance Michael Scullin, of Merivale, was found in the backyard of his home on Kesteven Avenue at 10am on Sunday.
Police say the 50-year-old neighbourhood support coordinator was hit with a fence paling about 12 hours earlier when he helped to break up a fight outside his house.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said on Monday that a post-mortem has proved inconclusive and officers are waiting for results of further tests.
Mr Turner said they are keeping an open mind about how Mr Scullin died and working to establish the full sequence of events.
Police want to talk to eight young men they believe were involved, and also to find the fence paling they think was used in the fight.
