Coroner to investigate kayaking deaths

11:50 am on 2 December 2013

The coroner will investigate the deaths of a father and his six-year old daughter who drowned in Lake Tarawera while kayaking.

The pair, who were from Auckland, tipped into the lake from a one-person kayak on Sunday morning.

The girl was wearing an adult-sized life jacket, while her father was not wearing one at all.

Constable Colin Fraser says the life jacket slipped off the girl as soon as she fell out of the kayak and though her father tried to hold her up for as long as he could, help could not get there in time.

Mr Fraser says police have on Monday been making sure family members have been informed before releasing more details about the pair.
